Arthur is shown as living at his father's address 73 Devonshire Road, Forest Hill in the 1911 census. He was aged 30 in 1917, was single and worked as a timber salesman.

Conscientious Objection during the First World War:
He was exempted from combatant service as a Plymouth Brethren.

War Service:
He was conscripted into the Non-combatant corps on 16 January, 1917 at Camberwell and served at home with the 10 Eastern and the 3 Southern corps of the NCC until he was demobilised on 25 December 1919.

After the First World War:
His demob address is given as Sunny Hill Mount, Russell Hill Road, Purley
