Conscientious Objection during the First World War:
Horace's motivation is unknown, but he was granted exemption from combatant duties conditional on his serving in the Non-combatant corps

War Service:
He was conscripted on 26 August 1916 at Camberwell Recruiting Office into the 6 Eastern Company and transferred on 22 August, 1916 to the 7 Eastern company attached to the Royal Sussex regiment. He served at home from then until the 29 December, 1919 when he was demobbed.
