Henry worked as a railway clerk, and was married, to Annie Reece, he was 32 in 1916.

Conscientious Objection during the First World War:
He was exempted from combatant service as a Plymouth Brethren.

War Service:
He was conscripted into the Non-combatant corps at Camberwell on 22 August, 1916. He served at home with the 7 Eastern initially, and then with the 5 Southern from 6 February 1917

After the First World War:
He was demobilised on 22 December 1919.
