He was an Advertising Manager was aged 27 in 1916 and was single. He lived with his brother Percy Herbert who was also a conscientious objector and his father George.

Conscientious Objection during the First World War:
He was exempted from combatant service as a Plymouth Brethren

War Service:
He was conscripted into the Non-combatant corps on 19 April, 1916 and served with the 1 Northern and 10 Eastern companies. On 29 May 1916 he was sent to France and served there until 16 February, 1919. He then served at home until 4 December 1919 when he was eventually demobilised.
