Conscientious Objection during the First World War:
Edward was granted Exemption from Combatant Service by a Military Service Tribunal, possibly at Lewisham. His motivation for claiming conscientious objection is unknown.

War Service:
He was conscripted into the Non-Combatant Corps on 5 September 1916 to the 7 Eastern Company at Newhaven. On 1 March 1919 he was transferred to the 5 Southern company and was demoted on 1 May 1919. He had served at home for the duration of the war.
