He was 31 in 1916, was single and worked as a clerk. His mother Frances is shown as his next of kin on his enlistment forms.

Conscientious Objection during the First World War:
Alfred was exempted from combatant service as a Plymouth Brethren.

War Service:
He was conscripted into the Non-combatant Corps on 22 March, 1916. It seems he may have been allocated to the Bedford regiment initially but he was transferred within 2 days to the 1 Eastern company of the NCC.
