Transcript of a Report from The Lewisham Borough News March 17, 1916
"A Lee butcher's assistant name Rider, who pleaded exemption on conscientious grounds, curiously quoted the Commandment "Thou shalt not kill".
The Chairman : Don't you mean thou shalt not do any murder?
Applicant : Yes, but do you mean I should murder anybody.
Thou shalt not kill What? - Killing anything I suppose.
A Member of the Tribunal : Well, how is it you are a butcher then?
Applicant said he took no part in the slaughter house work.
His application was refused.
Applicant : I shall certainly appeal; it's certainly very unsatisfactory down here"
